Texas Statehood Day is Coming Up!

Lisa Pittman | January 25th, 2017

February 19 is Texas Statehood Day.
On this day in 1846, power was officially transferred from the Republic of Texas to the state of Texas, as it joined the United States. It was the only time in our country’s history that an independent nation became a state.
On December 29, 1845, Texas officially joined the United States and J. Pinckney Henderson was sworn in as the state’s first governor on February 19 of the next year.

Mirabeau B. Lamar Day

Lisa Pittman | January 25th, 2017

January 26 is recognized as Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar Day.
On that date in 1839, the Republic of Texas Congress passed The Education Act, setting aside land for public schools.
He was born August 16, 1798 in Baldwin County, Georgia. He worked in the newspaper business and politics until the death of his wife and brother. Grief stricken, in the summer of 1835 he visited his friend James Fannin in Texas.
He distinguished himself at the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1836 Lamar was elected Vice President under Sam Houston. December 10, 1838 he was inaugurated as President of the Republic of Texas. Lamar has been called “the Father of Texas Education” because of his provisions of land to support it.
He returned to army service when Sam Houston replaced him as President in 1841. After statehood he served in the Texas Legislature and later served as a U.S. diplomat in Central America.
He died December 19, 1859 of a heart attack at his Richmond, Texas plantation.

Name Tags

Lisa Pittman | September 25th, 2016

Members of the Chapter are being offered the opportunity to purchase a name tag to wear to meetings and other Chapter events. The name tags are available with a magnetic back or a pin back. You can order one of the name tags through Sherilyn Beal, our Chapter president, by October 1. The cost for the name tag, which includes mailing, is $11.50. Name tags purchased during this time will not have to pay sales tax. Orders after the October 1 deadline will need to go through the actual engraving company and sales tax will be added to the $11.50. We’ll provide that information on the blog and in an email to members after the 1st.
