Abraham Skidmore
Abraham Skidmore
Abraham Skidmore was born in 1797 in Madison Co., Kentucky. He served with the Tennessee Militia during the War of 1812. By 1818 he was in Morgaan Co., AL where he was a surveyor and sheriff of Morgan Co. He married Celia Thompson in 1820.
Abe Skidmore was a close friend of David Crockett, having previously been neighbors. They made arrangements to meet at a designated place. Not finding each other, both traveled seperately, not meeting until both were in Texas. Abe arrived in Texas Jan. 5, 1836. Crokett visited and hunted buffalo near what is now Honey Grove in until he left for San Antonio and death. Skidmore was granted a First Class Headright for one league and one labor. He settled 12 miles south of Paris, Texas.
